World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day

I chair the NGO Sport Against Racism Ireland (SARI) and every June, with UNHCR Ireland, we host the World Refugee Day Fair Play Cup at The Law Society sports grounds in Dublin. It's an opportunity to mark the plight of refugees worldwide and the lives of those refugees living in Ireland - and to invite them to take part in the tournament. Many of them are refugees in waiting - Asylum seekers - living in Direct Provision Centres scattered around the country. They are not allowed to work and receive €19.10 per week. Each child is allocated €9.60 per week. www.sari.ie  www.unhcr.ie

Roger Mayne

Very sad to hear that Roger Mayne passed away on Saturday. His Southam Street series of photographs from the mid/late Fifties remains one of my favourite. I am fortunate to have some prints from the series including this one.

Streetfootballworld

Visiting my friends at streetfootballworld in Berlin. Streetfootballworld is a network of NGOs that use football for social change. A powerful worldwide movement. I love this photograph that's on the wall of their office and was taken in Afghanistan - not sure by who but it's a great photo.

Mannix Flynn

Mannix Flynn

Great to see Mannix is making good use of the picture we shot for his Dublin City Council election poster campaign. Writer, actor and politician, Mannix was elected to the council five years ago as an Independent and is now standing for re-election on May 23rd. Get a copy of his autobiographical novel 'Nothing To Say' - first published in 1983 - about a young boy being sent to an Industrial school run by Christian Brothers. A wonderful book and way ahead of its time.

Bacon triptych

Just received a beautiful and lavish catalogue from Christie's New York for the sale of Francis Bacon's triptych 'Three Studies for a Portrait of John Edwards' (1984) which is coming up at auction on 13th May. They used quite a few of my photos for the catalogue including this one of Francis Bacon's kitchen at 7 Reece Mews. Two panels of the triptych can be seen in the top left corner of this photo.
