SARI Soccerfest 2014

SARI Soccerfest 2014

The quiet before the storm... all set up for the annual SARI Soccerfest which kicks-off tomorrow morning in the Phoenix Park, Dublin and runs for two days. This is the 18th year of Soccerfest -  I've been involved since the start! - and it's grown from 120 players in 1997 to well over 600. Teams come from all over Ireland and last year there were over fifty nationalities represented. On Sunday we have the Love/Hate All Stars captained by Aiden Gillen playing the SARI All Stars captained by TD and Minister Aodhán Ó Ríordáin. May the best team win!

Two Days, One Night

Two Days, One Night

I'm a big fan of the Dardenne brothers and was keen to see their new film 'Two days, One Night' starring Marion Cotillard. This is the first time they've worked with a "star". She's good and the film is good but the script is a little predictable/traditional and it certainly doesn't have the edge of earlier Dardennes' films like 'Rosetta' - a masterpiece in which they re-invigorated social realism. See my interview with the Dardennes: Read here

Werner Herzog

Werner Herzog

It's been a while since I marvelled at a Werner Herzog film though I did enjoy 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams'. The ones that have really stayed with me are 'Even Dwarfs Started Small', 'Land of Silence and Darkness', 'Aguirre', 'Stroczek' and 'Fitzcarraldo' - all made before he moved to the U.S. But whether he's trying to pull a steamship over a hill in the Amazon or walking from Munich to Paris in mid-winter - in the belief that he will cure a good friend's illness - he is always fascinating. In fact, he is a true original and one of the greats not just of German cinema but of World cinema. Looks like this book is an update of Faber's 'Herzog on Herzog'. Sold!
